Happy Birthday Luke Skywalker:

Today, the twenty-fifth of September, is birthday of the one and only Mark Hamill, most well known, of course, for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars trilogy! It is Hamill's 49th birthday, but I believe Luke is supposed to be a few years younger than that. Even though my title would suggest otherwise, you can't really say that it's Luke's birthday too, because he and Leia are twins, and Carrie Fisher's birthday is in October. Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK HAMILL!

Trivial Pursuits:

On birthdays, it is usually the custom for parents to give a gift(s) to their child. Well, this year my parents gave me something to appeal to my vast knowledge of trivial Star Wars information. Trivial Pursuit Star Wars Classic Trilogy Collector's Edition I believe is the full title of this board game. There must be someone out there who's played the normal version of Trivial Pursuit, I myself had always flunked whenever I tried to play it. Well, that has changed. Last night my dad and I played the Star Wars version for the first time.

First, press the R2-D2 "randomizer" to show you how many spaces to move on the board. Artoo shrills his trademark whistling, plus a telephone ringing sound that I don't know where they got. Then, pick up your cute little lead rendition of your favorite Star Wars character (Luke, Leia, Han or Vader), and move it to your spot. All right, time for the hard part.

Now, at this point in the game I was sitting ready to get a question that would challenge my Star Wars knowledge, but, well, when you have knowledge like me, I thought, it shouldn't be too hard! "How many half circular disks make up the Rebel shield generator on Hoth?" That threw me for a loop. "Um...five?" There were four. I sighed and my dad took his turn. Dad started advancing in the game quicker than me, and I was afraid he might actually win. I need not have worried, for things turned around and I won the game in the end.

My Star Wars knowledge was tested throughout this game, and I feel like I was sharpening my skills. I can't wait till the next time we can play it, and no matter what, I will never forget that the person Darth Vader choked in the conference room was Admiral Motti.

The Power of the Thumb:

Princess Bunhead. Han Duet. Black Helmet Man. Lightsabers extending from thumbnails. You will find all of these things if you dare to use the power of the Thumb. To make it official, touch your tongue to this page.*

No wait, before you really do, I'll tell you what this is all about! For those of you who haven't heard of it, Thumb Wars is a very entertaining spoof on everyone's favorite sci-fi trilogy. The "actors" in this short are quite striking; they are all, well, thumbs! And not only thumbs, but thumbs with bizzare real-looking human faces on them. The story begins the same way A New Hope does, with Princess Bunhead's ship being attacked by Black Helmet Man's evil fleet. Elements from all three movies are parodied as the story continues. I would quote some brilliant lines from the film, but I'm afraid it would spoil your experience if you were to see it.

Here's my opinion: As you've probably already guessed, I was laughing almost all the way through this short film when I first saw it. It's absolutely hilarious in some spots! There were a few instances of crude humor that need not have been there, however. As always, I want to know what you think! I'm sure there must be someone out there who has seen this short. If so, drop me a line and tell me what you think! E-mail me.

*I didn't make this up! It's from the movie.

Union Review:

For several months I have waited for this book, a barely eighth-of-an-inch thick trade paperback. Why, you ask? Mostly curiosity. After all, this was the wedding of Luke Skywalker we were talking about! A very important event in Star Wars history, and I was wondering how it would be handled.

To start with, the graphics in this comic are absolutely beautiful. They have a photographic look to them, and are some of the best drawings I've ever seen in a comic book. One of my favorite parts was a hilarious scene with Mara trying on wedding dresses, none of which... um... suited her taste. It was also very nice to see camios from expanded universe characters such as Tionne, Talon Karrde, Booster Terrik and the Solo children. The plot is a little weak, however. The bad guys aren't very strong, and the conclusion of the story is unrealistic. Over all, it was a very enjoyable read, although I'm not sure it was worth the twelve ninety-five price tag. It was almost worth it just to see Mara in her wedding gown. ;-)

What do you think? Have you read Union too, and think I'm totally off base? Do you know something I don't? E-mail me!
